About paradigm/task/stimuli, When researchers or clinicians perform a task, the neuronal activity in the brain area specific to that particular task increases. Enhanced neuronal activity leads to a local increase in electrical and magnetic signals, as well as energy and oxygen consumption in functional brain areas, which is followed by an increase of regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). Since increased neuronal activity results in an increase in blood flow beyond the exact demand, more oxygenated hemoglobin appears in the venous capillaries.
